My Personal Mission Statement

At BBC we are working towards helping each member develop a personal mission statement that is derived from a passage of Scripture.  It’s a great exercise that will help us to frame our lives around a powerful purpose.

For many years my personal mission statement has been 1 Corinthians 10:31 which reads “So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.

Consider the reach of that statement.  It speaks into every aspect of your life, even something as simply as eating and drinking.  Glorify God through your speech, through your parenting, through your marriage, through your time at work, everything.

What is so moving to me is the reminder that everything I do has the opportunity to expand God’s kingdom.  It keeps me from taking for granted my relationships with people and the time that I have on this earth.  It also reminds me that everything I do is under an ethical imperative.  Nothing that I do is outside of God’s lordship.  There is no time off when it comes to living a Godly life.  It is all a part of the journey that God has called us to.

This doesn’t mean that I accomplish this mission perfectly.  I often fail to glorify God through my actions.  Maybe it’s a harsh word towards my children or viewing a movie that I wouldn’t watch with Jesus sitting next to me.  But, I am reminded that God is also glorified through repentance and His giving of grace.  So when I stray, I am ever more thankful that I am not disqualified for my mission, and that His grace has allowed me to continue in the journey.

That’s my mission statement.  What will yours be?
